AWARD WINNER:
Mayors Design Award, 2000
Recognizing property restoration and enhancement in a way that respects the urban fabric and contributes to the character of the surroundings
General Capital collaborated with the Northwest Side Communit Development Corporation (NWSCDC) to redevelop this underutilized urban property and bring a major national grocery store to the neighborhood. The northwest side was underserved by retail services, particularly grocery, as most regional and national retailers focused their development efforts on the suburbs. A closed department store created an eyesore at the intersection of Appleton and Grantosa Avenues in the City of Milwaukee, but created an opportunity for focused redevelopment.

General Capital led the development effort and the NWSCDC provided assistance with a low-interest loan and job placement program. The loan has been paid in full and now serves as a reserve fund for the NWSCDC for future neighborhood investments. The projects design incorporated ele-ments of the existing building and sensitively combined form and function to create a clean, modern look. Restored display windows enliven the street and customers are welcomed by sidewalk connections, a generous glass storefront and covered arcade. A bus shelter, coordinated in design with other site elements, provides comfortable public transportation options.
